We offer exceptional opportunities for exposure to sports physiotherapy across a wide range of levels, from community sport to elite performance. Our team works closely with local and regional sports teams, including Rugby Southland and the Stags, Southern Steel, Sharks Basketball and Academy Southland as well as individual athletes, providing on-field support, injury prevention, and rehabilitation services. Clinicians have the chance to gain hands-on experience managing acute injuries, designing return-to-play plans, and using advanced technology such as force plates and HHDs to guide decision-making. Whether you’re early in your career or looking to deepen your expertise in sports rehab, you’ll be supported to step into sideline roles, build strong clinical reasoning skills, and learn from colleagues with extensive experience in high-performance environments.
At Sportsmed, you’ll be guided by experienced clinicians who are committed to helping you thrive. We offer regular one-on-one sessions, access to senior clinicians for second opinions, structured support for new graduates, and a workplace culture where questions are encouraged and learning is shared. Our open-door policy means you’re never on your own, whether it’s clinical reasoning, tricky cases, or managing a busy caseload, you’ll have the support you need to build confidence and grow into the best physiotherapist you can be.
At Sportsmed, professional development is a big part of our WHY. We foster a strong learning culture that encourages curiosity, reflection, and growth, with the belief that great clinicians are always evolving. Our structured professional development program includes annual allowances for external courses, access to platforms like Learn.Physio and Physio Network, regular in-service training, and guest lectures. We prioritise mentoring, peer learning, and shared reflection, supporting each other to be curious, courageous, and open about what we don’t know. Whether you’re building confidence in your core skills or diving deeper into a passion area, we’re here to back your journey. We believe in developing career physios, not just for our clinic, but for the profession as a whole.
We regularly host expert guest lecturers at Sportsmed to bring high-quality, up-to-date learning directly to our team. These sessions allow staff to learn together in a supportive environment, ask questions freely, and strengthen clinical reasoning through shared discussion. Past speakers have included Angela Cadogan (Physiotherapy Shoulder Specialist), Katherine Forch (Axis – Concussion) and Professor Duncan Reid (AUT University).
At Sportsmed, we integrate advanced technology into our clinical practice to enhance assessment, treatment, and recovery. Our team uses tools like the VALD Dynamo system and ForceDecks to objectively measure strength, power, and progress, helping guide decision-making and track outcomes with precision. We also offer Game Ready for advanced cold and compression therapy to support post-injury and post-surgical recovery. These technologies not only improve patient care but also provide valuable learning opportunities for our clinicians.
"After returning to Sportsmed recently I was very impressed by the outstanding care shown towards staff both as a professional and person. As a previous director I was extremely proud of the way in which Physiotherapy staff were mentored and the emphasis that goes on developing the clinical reasoning and assessment and treatment skills of their physiotherapists. This is done with a lovely balance between challenge and care- a perfect model and one that I believe is second to none in the industry. I was lucky enough to be given a significant proportion of my time to have one on one sessions with staff where I would either observe and help staff with patients or simply sit with them 1on1 answering any questions they had. This would be followed up with practical teaching using my experiences (both good and sometimes not so good!) to help grow the physiotherapists skills and understanding. I believe this is rare and certainly wish I had this type of support when I was a less experienced physiotherapist. I am looking forward to doing the same in the future."
We are currently running clinics at SBHS and JHC Senior Campus.
